Ketovore Diet: The Complete Guide to the Keto-to-Carnivore Bridge
I did not stay on ketovore long. It was the short stretch between keto and full carnivore, the place where I dropped the last of the plants and leaned into meat as the base of every meal. Looking back, that stretch mattered more than I gave it credit for at the time. It let my body adjust before I cut out every plant food at once.
If you are searching for ketovore, you are probably standing where I stood. You have done keto. Carbs are already low. Now you are wondering if carnivore is the next step, and whether there is a way to get there without shocking your system.
This guide covers what ketovore is, how it differs from keto and carnivore, a full food list, and how to use it as a transition instead of a permanent stopping point.
What Is the Ketovore Diet? A Beginner's Breakdown
Ketovore sits between keto and carnivore. The base of every meal is animal food: meat, fish, eggs, organs, and animal fat. On top of that base, some people keep a small number of low-carb plant foods, things like avocado, olives, and a few low-carb vegetables, mostly as a bridge while the rest of the transition settles in.
Think of it this way: carnivore removes plants completely. Keto allows a wider range of plants as long as total carbs stay low. Ketovore narrows the plant list down to a handful of foods that offer variety without pulling carbs up or triggering the reactions that push people toward carnivore in the first place.
There is no formal body of peer-reviewed research on ketovore as its own diet. What exists is research on its individual pieces: ketogenic eating, carnivore eating, and the specific foods that show up on a ketovore plate. The diet itself is a practical framework built by people who tried strict carnivore and found a version that was easier to sustain.
Ketovore vs Keto vs Strict Carnivore
Keto: Focuses on staying under a daily carb limit, usually 20 to 50 grams net carbs. Fat is the primary fuel source. Plant foods are allowed as long as they fit the carb budget: leafy greens, nuts, seeds, low-carb fruit, cheese.
Ketovore: Animal food is the base of every meal. Plants are limited to a short list chosen for nutrient density rather than variety. No counting macros in the way keto requires, since animal food is naturally low carb.
Carnivore: Animal products only. No plants of any kind, including spices that come from plants in the strictest versions. Salt and water are the only additions.
If you have read about the lion diet, that is carnivore taken further still, limited to ruminant meat, salt, and water. If you have read about the animal-based diet, that is the opposite direction, carnivore with fruit and honey added back in. Ketovore sits closer to carnivore than either of those, but it keeps a door open that strict carnivore closes.

Ketovore and Nutrient Deficiencies: What the Science Actually Shows
Strict carnivore, done right, does not leave you deficient. Eat a variety of meat, lean into ruminant cuts like beef and lamb, and you are covered. There is no nutrient gap to close if the meat on your plate has variety. Organs are a bonus if you enjoy them, not something you have to force down to stay healthy.
Vitamin C is the example people bring up most. Glucose and vitamin C share the same transport pathway into your cells. When you cut out plant carbs and sugar, that competition disappears, and the small amount of vitamin C in meat goes further than it would on a high-carb diet. This is why scurvy was not a concern for populations that lived almost entirely on animal food. Your system is not juggling two competing processes anymore.
The plant foods some people keep on ketovore, avocado, olives, fermented vegetables, are not there to plug a hole. They are a personal preference and, for some, an easier on-ramp while the rest of the transition settles in. Nothing about them is required to eat this way and stay well.
Transitioning From Keto to Carnivore: Why Ketovore Works as a Bridge
Going from a standard diet straight to carnivore is a large jump, and most people assume fiber loss is the reason it feels rough. I do not put much weight on that. Fiber is not classified as an essential nutrient. There is no deficiency disease tied to its absence, and the gut microbiome shift that happens when fiber drops out, bile-tolerant bacteria increasing while fiber-fermenting species decrease, is not itself a sign of harm.
What actually drives the rough patch is electrolytes. Cutting carbs lowers insulin, and lower insulin tells your kidneys to release more sodium. That sodium loss pulls water and other minerals out with it. This is the same mechanism behind keto flu, and it hits harder on a full jump to carnivore because the drop in insulin and the shift in what you are eating happen all at once.
Ketovore softens that transition because you are not making the jump all at once. You are already eating low carb from keto, so your insulin and electrolyte balance have already adjusted. What changes is the plant volume, and it drops slowly instead of all at once. By the time you are ready to move to strict carnivore, if you choose to, your body has already done most of the electrolyte adjustment, and salting your food, along with keeping potassium and magnesium in the mix, carries you through the rest.
Ketovore also solves a social problem strict carnivore creates. Eating out, sharing meals with family, and keeping a few foods you genuinely enjoy gets harder on strict carnivore. Ketovore keeps enough flexibility that those situations stay manageable while you are still building the habit.
Common Ketovore Mistakes
Worrying that staying on it permanently is a problem. It is not. This is closer to how humans ate before agriculture than anything on a modern plate. Plenty of people, myself included, land here and never look back. I am 62, I feel younger than I have in years, and I cannot picture going back to eating plants the way I used to. If you get to that point too, there is nothing wrong with staying there for good.
Thinking you have to eat organs. You do not. Eat a variety of meat, lean into ruminant meat like beef and lamb, and you are covered. There is no nutrient gap to fill if you are eating real, varied muscle meat.
Keeping berries and honey around. Both are sugar. Honey is sugar in a different form and berries carry fructose, and neither belongs on this way of eating. The easiest path is to cut them completely rather than trying to moderate them. Once you decide they are off the table, it stops being a decision you have to make every day. A taste of something at a restaurant now and then is different from keeping them stocked at home.
Ignoring electrolytes. This applies across keto, ketovore, and carnivore. Cutting carbs changes how your body handles sodium, potassium, and magnesium. Salt your food and pay attention to how you feel, especially in the first two weeks.
Ketovore Diet Meal Plan: Sample Day of Eating
Meal one: Three eggs cooked in butter, a few strips of bacon, half an avocado.
Meal two: Ground beef with beef liver mixed in, a small serving of sauerkraut on the side.
Meal three: Grilled salmon, bone broth, a few cucumber slices.
This is one version. Ketovore does not require a fixed number of meals, and plenty of people following it also use OMAD or a compressed eating window.
How Much Protein You Need
Protein is the main event on ketovore, not an afterthought. A simple starting point is 0.7 to 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight per day, adjusted up if you train hard or are trying to build muscle. A 150 pound person lands somewhere between 105 and 150 grams a day, spread across however many meals you eat.
Build the plate around that number first. Meat and fish fill most of the plate, fat comes along with the cuts you choose or gets added separately, and the plant side, avocado or a few cucumber slices, stays small. Protein leads. Everything else fills in around it.
How Long to Stay on Ketovore Before Carnivore
There is no set timeline, and this is where people either get stuck or move too fast. Some stay in ketovore permanently because it gives them the benefits they are after without the restriction of strict carnivore. Others use it as a two to four week bridge before dropping the remaining plant foods.
For me, the move from ketovore to full carnivore was easy, almost natural. I was not fighting cravings or forcing myself through it. I felt good, and the more I learned, the more obvious it became that I did not need plants at all. Dropping the rest was not a hard decision by the time I got there.
The honest answer is to let your body set the pace. If digestion is smooth, energy is steady, and you are not craving the foods you removed, you are ready to narrow further if that is your goal. If you are still adjusting, staying in ketovore longer costs you nothing.
Either way, you are already ahead of the metabolic game. Someone eating keto or ketovore is getting healthier by the day compared to someone on the standard American diet. If you are happy where you are, stay there. No judgment from me. My hat is off to anyone putting in this kind of commitment to their own health.
Is the Ketovore Diet Right for You
Ketovore fits well if any of this sounds like you:
You have done keto and want to go further without jumping straight to strict carnivore
You want the metabolic benefits of a mostly-animal diet and like having a small plant option while you adjust
You eat in social settings where strict carnivore is hard to maintain
You are ready to change how you eat and want an easier entry point into a mostly-animal plate
If you are ready to skip the bridge and eat organ-free, plant-free, and simple, strict carnivore might suit you better than ketovore ever will. There is no wrong answer here. The point of trying ketovore first is finding out.
If you are ready to go further, my 90-Day Carnivore Reset guide walks through the full move to strict carnivore, with 30 days of personal email support built in.
Wherever you land, keto, ketovore, or full carnivore, what matters is why you are there. This is not about chasing a trend. It is about the benefits you feel and see once you commit. I meet people where they are. A real commitment to any of these ways of eating is a commitment to your own health, and that is worth celebrating at every stage, not just the strictest one.
Ketovore Diet FAQ
Is ketovore the same as keto? No. Keto allows a wide range of plant foods as long as carbs stay low. Ketovore narrows plants down to a short list and puts animal food at the center of every meal.
Do you count macros on ketovore? Most people do not track macros as closely as they would on keto, since a mostly-animal plate stays low carb without much effort. Some still track in the early weeks to confirm they are in range.
Can you lose weight on the ketovore diet? Weight loss on ketovore follows the same pattern as keto and carnivore: reduced carb intake, steady protein and fat, and for many people, reduced appetite. Individual results depend on starting point, activity, and overall calorie intake.
Is the ketovore diet healthy long term? There is no long-term controlled research on ketovore specifically. The individual components, animal-based eating and low carb intake, have more research behind them. Anyone with existing health conditions should talk to a doctor before making a major diet change.
What is the difference between ketovore and the lion diet? The lion diet is more restrictive than ketovore. It allows only ruminant meat, salt, and water, with no plant foods at all, not even the small additions ketovore permits.
